Airtightness Testing FAQ – Common Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Ideally, engage Aerotight at design stage. The earlier we are involved, the more cost-effective the result. At minimum, testing should be ordered before the building envelope is sealed to allow remediation if required.

For a typical residential apartment building, allow 1–2 days for preliminary testing and 2–4 days for final compliance testing, depending on building size and number of apartments.

ACH (Air Changes per Hour) measures total air leakage relative to the building volume. m³/h·m² measures leakage relative to the building envelope area. NCC 2022 uses m³/h·m²; Passive House uses ACH. Both are measured at 50 Pa.

Yes. If the building does not meet the required standard, a defect report is issued identifying leakage locations. Rectification works are completed and the building is retested. The first test is typically a preliminary test to identify issues before the final compliance test.

Both methods are used. NCC 2022 permits whole-building testing or statistical sampling. Passive House requires testing of representative apartments. Aerotight will advise the most appropriate protocol for your project.
